Following their amazing English Grandeur celebration on April 14th at the Sacramento Community Center Theater, the SCSO and Conductor Donald Kendrick are now thrilled to be making their debut in Fremont Presbyterian Church’s recently renovated sanctuary on Saturday, June 2 at 8 PM.

The concert entitled European Traditions is part of the Sacramento Choral Society’s Stained Glass series that started originally in 2009 at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Sacramento. “What a thrill it is for us to discover this amazing space and take full advantage of Fremont’s acoustics and the recently installed powerful new Reuter pipe organ,” says Kendrick. “Fremont has done a royal job on its renovation and the pipe organ is one of the largest in Northern California. This concert is a fitting way to end our 16th season of offering classical music concerts for families in our community,” he adds.

For this year-end performance, the SCSO has chosen to perform works from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary eras. Great names such as Bach, Mendelssohn, Bruckner, Stanford, Clausen, Hogan, Vaughan Williams and Randall Thompson will appear on the program. The group’s performance will highlight a variety of musical styles through the ages with works sung in Latin, German and English.

SCSO Accompanist and Organist Ryan Enright will showcase the might Reuter pipe organ with solo performances by Bach entitled Piece d’Orgue and works by Brahms and other composers that will surely demonstrate the power and the versatility of Fremont’s gleaming new pipe organ. “Ryan is finishing off his first year as the SCSO accompanist and organist at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sacramento where he will also be giving his Sacramento debut organ recital on Sunday, May 27 at 3 PM,” says SCSO President James McCormick. “Ryan is the winner of the Canadian National Organ Competition and was recently one of 16 finalists in the International Organ Competition held in Montreal in October 2011. We are delighted to have Ryan in our Community and his versatility has also been seen in his work in accompanying the Sacramento State Choirs and also Sacred Heart’s Schola Cantorum,” McCormick adds.

Soprano Katherine Jolly, a native of Davis, California and a former Davis High School Madrigal singer will also grace the SCSO stage as soloist in Fremont with a performance of Mozart’s Laudate Dominum and Vivaldi’s Gloria Patri taken from his larger work Deus in Adjutorium Domine. Katherine is currently finishing a run of Gilbert & Sullivan’s Mikado with the Virginia Opera, playing the role of Yum-Yum. She is known for her agile, bright lyric soprano voice, totally suitable for the Vivaldi and Mozart works.

“It is our distinct pleasure to feature important works by American composers such as Moses Hogan, Rene Clausen and Randall Thompson on this unique program,” says conductor Donald Kendrick. “No choral concert would be complete without an American spiritual or two,” he adds.” We are also proud to feature SCSO members Abram Stein-Freer and Nephi Speer as soloists,” says Kendrick.

There will be no pre-concert talk for this performance but the SCSO plans to host a post-concert reception at which concert attendees will have an opportunity to meet the artists and enjoy some refreshments. Free parking is right nearby at the Scottish Rite Center at 6151 H Street. There will be no intermission in the evening’s concert.

Tickets are reasonably price at $35.00 Reserved or $25.00 General. Students enjoy 50% discount for this performance. Tickets can be ordered via the SCSO office at (916) 536-9065 (M - F - 10 AM - 4 PM) or by going online at the SCSO’s website: www.sacramentochoral.com.

Wells Fargo Answers Sac Philharmonic Appeal
Wells Fargo Donated $10,000 in Response to Sacramento Philharmonic Request for Help

SACRAMENTO REGION – On April 12, the Sacramento Philharmonic launched a major campaign to bridge its funding shortfall. Board President and CEO David Nystrom announced that the Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra, which completed its 15th concert season on Sunday, April 1, may be forced to close its doors at the end of the fiscal year, June 30, 2012.

If $150,000 can’t be raised by May 1, the Board may take action to dissolve the corporation. An additional $150,000 would be needed by June 30 in commitments for the 2012-13 Season.

Response from the community included an immediate contribution by Wells Fargo on April 18 to support “See the Music, Hear the Art,” a program for children in transitional housing, shelters and hospitals that enables them to create art work inspired by listening to great works of music, both recorded and live.

Professional musicians from the Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra perform at each site and interact with children and their families. In addition to introducing children to the beauty of live orchestral music, these musicians provide role models who can demonstrate the results of persistence and dedication.

Musicians encourage children to pursue their dreams and goals, especially education. The program has expanded over a three-year period and will culminate in an exhibit of the children’s art at the Crocker Museum in the summer of 2012.

Board President Nystrom expressed the Philharmonic’s gratitude. “Wells Fargo has been a long-time supporter. We hope other businesses will follow their lead.” In the first three days since the announcement of its funding woes, contributions of more than $50,000 have poured in. Donors have mailed checks, contributed on line and telephoned to make contributions.

Media coverage in addition to public announcement have fueled interest in the future of the 15-year-old orchestra. Board Fundraising Chair Sandy Smoley smiled broadly, “We’re so gratified and excited at the community response.

With such support continuing, we have strong hopes of reaching our goals.” Keep This Valuable Resource in SacramentoContributions can be sent to the Sacramento Philharmonic, 2617 K Street, Suite 200, Sacramento, CA 95816 and are tax-deductible as provided by law.

The Philharmonic is a Nonprofit Public Benefit 501 (c)3 organization. The Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra Association, Inc. is the professional symphonic orchestra for the Sacramento region and receives support from a variety of regional and national sources, including the Sacramento Philharmonic Foundation, the James Irvine Foundation, Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts, Raley’s, Wells Fargo Foundation, Target and numerous individuals, businesses and foundations.

New Exhibit Spotlights Germany's Premier Cars

WUNDERCARS! Exhibit to feature Porsche, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen
Posted: 9/29/2011

The California Automobile Museum opens WUNDERCARS! this Saturday, October 1, as new exhibit highlighting the long and dynamic history of the German automobile. In addition to a long-term exhibit tracing the impact of the American market on the German automotive industry - and the impact of the German automobile on America - a rotating gallery will spotlight the histories of four of Germany's premier automakers.

The rotating gallery will go in-depth into the histories of four of Germany's best-known, most influential automakers. First in the spotlight, from October 1 through November 27, will be Porsche, Germany's premier sports car specialist. BMW will follow from November 28 to January 22, then Mercedes-Benz from January 23 to March 18, and finally Volkswagen from March 19 to May 12. Germany's rich automotive history will be followed from its nineteenth-century beginnings to its current enviable state at the forefront of performance, technology, and design.

Among the featured cars, which range from family sedans to supercars, are such unique finds as a 1959 Porsche 356 Carrera GS and a 1964 Amphicar Model 770. The Porsche, one of 26 such cars built in 1959, features an exotic, race-bred engine and is named for the Carrera Panamericana race at which a Porsche with the same engine captured a class win in 1954. The Carrera name has been a hallmark of many iconic Porsches since. The Amphicar is designed for use as a car or a boat, using the front wheels instead of a rudder for steering on water. The "Model 770" designation pays homage to its claimed top speeds: 7 knots on water or 70 miles per hour on land.

Germany has been at the forefront of automotive development and innovation since the earliest days of the horseless carriage. In addition to Germany's most famous names, WUNDERCARS! will bring back memories of cars that have come and gone from American shores - anyone remember Opel? - and introduce visitors to some of Germany's more obscure automakers, designers of some of the most unique cars ever produced.

This Friday, September 30, Gearhead Museum Members have been invited to a "Members Only Preview" to come and enjoy the WUNDERCARS! exhibit, and hear from Bob Garretson, race car driver and owner of the Porsche 935 Sports Car Team and enjoy German delights from Sacramento famed restaurant Hof Brau coupled with German Beer from Sudwerk Brewery. The exhibit will be open to the press by appointment. Please contact Deborah Davis or Karen McClaflin at the above listed telephone numbers or send email inquiries to pr@calautomuseum.org.

The mission of the California Automobile Museum is to preserve, exhibit and teach the story of the automobile and its influence on our lives.

The California Automobile Museum is located at 2200 Front Street, Sacramento, CA 95818. The public can contact the Museum by telephone at 916-442-6802, or visit its website at www.calautomuseum.org. The Museum is open 7 days a week from 10am-6pm, and on the third Thursday of every month until 9pm.

Plus, Two Old Sacramento Restaurants Offer Dining Discounts For Underground Tour Participants
Posted: 9/22/2011

OLD SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Well into its second full season, the popular Old Sacramento Underground tour program is now redefining "Date Night" with special adult-only evening tours being offered for a limited time. Available for guests ages 18 and over, the special "Date Night" Underground Tours last approximately 90 minutes and will include tales of devastation, perseverance, and determination that led to California's only successful street-raising project, but will also include lots of shady stories and decidedly adult tales about colorful characters from Sacramento's past.

In addition, two of Old Sacramento's most popular restaurants are offering dining discounts for interested "Date Night" underground tour participants. The special evening tours will end at Ten22 Restaurant on Thursdays and at Fat City on Fridays.

Due to the limited availability, advance reservations are strongly encouraged for the "Date Night" underground tours as they are expected to sell out quickly. Crocker Art Museum Presents Exhibition of Italian Drawings and Prints

“The Art of Disegno” on view November 19, 2011 through January 12, 2012
Posted: 8/13/2011

Sacramento, Calif. – “The Art of Disegno: Italian Prints and Drawings from the Georgia Museum of Art” will be on view at the Crocker Art Museum from November 19, 2011 through January 12, 2012. The exhibition features 53 works on paper produced in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. These prints and drawings from the Georgia Museum of Art and the Giuliano Ceseri Collection provide rare insight into the training, working habits, and creative process of artists.

For Italian artists of this era, the art of drawing was regarded as an intellectual as well as a practical activity, and the images found in this exhibition represent examples of the most fertile and inspired artistic creations found on paper during this period.

"Beginning in the 14th century and increasing in the following centuries, as paper became more widely available, drawings became critical tools of the design process of artists," said Babette Bohn, professor of art history at Texas Christian University and co-curator of the exhibition.

Drawings also enjoyed a close relationship with prints during this period. For example, Giovanni Battista Piranesi's prints reveal a fantastical and visionary imagination. His works create an aura of mystery, not only because of the dramatic chiaroscuro, or contrast between light and dark, but also because of architectural elements that appear to have no real function, such as disappearing staircases and leaning ladders to nowhere.

"Prints enabled artists to replicate the designs created in drawings through a technology that provided the possibility of creating multiple works of art and facilitated the spread of the artists' reputation around the world," said Bohn.

The exhibition includes prints by some of the finest Italian printmakers, such as Parmigianino and Marcantonio Raimondi, and later examples by major figures such as Pietro Testa and Giovanni Battista Castiglione.

"This exhibition expands knowledge of Italian art, providing a wider context for drawings and prints known to visitors to the Crocker's Anne and Malcolm McHenry Works on Paper Study Center," said the Crocker's curator William Breazeale, Ph.D., coordinator for the Sacramento venue. The exhibition is accompanied by a full-color, hardback exhibition catalogue, with an introduction by Giancarlo Fiorenza, former Pierre Daura Curator of European Art at the Georgia Museum of Art, and catalogue entries by exhibition curators Bohn and Robert Randolf Coleman, associate professor of art history at the University of Notre Dame.

IN THE MOOD OPENS THREE STAGES FIRST “FULL” SEASON OF PERFORMANCE

Now in its 17th year, IN THE MOOD brings a big band theatrical swing revue to the Folsom stage
Posted: 8/3/2011

Featuring a company of 19 on stage—singers, dancers and a top-notch big band— IN THE MOOD brings to life the music of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Harry James, The Andrews Sisters, Frank Sinatra, and other greats of the 1940’s. Their performance marks the first of the 2011-12 Season of Performing Arts at Three Stages.

IN THE MOOD will perform in Three Stages on Saturday, August 27 at 2 pm and 8 pm, and again on Sunday, August 28 at 2 pm. Tickets are $25 to $39, with Premium tickets available for $45; they are available online at www.threestages.net or from Three Stages Ticket Office at 916-608-6888 from 10 am to 6 pm, Monday through Saturday, and two hours before show time. Three Stages is located on the west side of Folsom Lake College campus in Folsom, CA, facing East Bidwell Street.

“It’s a timeless music,” notes Three Stages Executive Director Dave Pier. “From those who grew up in the Swing Era to younger generations who have supported the recent resurgence in big bands, IN THE MOOD offers authentic costumes and choreography, excellent performers, and a true love of the music. It’s more than a concert performance; it’s a theatrical presentation of a moment in our cultural history.”

Not only does the company offer more than a concert, they will be guests of Folsom for an extended period of time. In September 2011 IN THE MOOD will be visiting the major cities of Australia. Preceding their tour, the company will take up a weeklong residency at Three Stages, preparing for the trip abroad.

IN THE MOOD began as a celebration of an unusual era in American music, the 1940s…the Swing Era. On radio, in theaters and ballrooms, the Big Bands were drawing record crowds. Vocal groups and soloists sang a repertory of great songs, and for the last time in the nation’s history, the entire country shared a common popular music. This body of song did much to sustain national morale during World War II, the pivotal event of the 20th Century.

The National Archives in Washington, DC brought IN THE MOOD to their audiences as part of their commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of WWII, and the response was extraordinary, with crowds lining up for hours before curtain time. The engagement was twice extended to extra performances.

Since then, IN THE MOOD has visited Europe and in 1997, the band and singers were selected to be part of the entertainment for the 53rd Presidential Inauguration Ball for President and Mrs. Bill Clinton. Touring since 1994, the show's upcoming national and international performances will continue to portray the spirit of the music that moved the nation.

New Exhibit Spotlights the Evolution of the Auto Show

Unique exhibit traces the legacy of auto show talent
Posted: 7/20/2011

The California Automobile Museum opens its newest exhibit, Sirens of Chrome, on Saturday, July 23 through September 25, 2011. The focus of this exhibit isn't simply sheet metal; it's on the distinctly human presence that makes the auto show unique; the models.

These human hood ornaments are descendants of the Sirens of ancient Greek lore. They seek not to dash ships upon rocks, but to entice the purchase of land-worthy ships to sail the highways and byways of America.

Sirens of Chrome is a traveling exhibit put together by the Detroit Public Library's National Automotive History Collection along with Margery Krevsky, owner and CEO of Productions Plus Talent Management Agency and the author of a book of the same title. This exhibit will include dozens of photographs capturing decades of hot vehicles and models, as well as vintage fashions worn by the models, and some of the unique vehicles they promoted.

Discover whose body inspired the famous Rolls-Royce hood ornament, the Spirit of Ecstasy, or sit in a rumble seat with 1930s silver-screen goddess Joan Blondell. Seek out the over-the-top opulence of the Somali leopard pelt-upholstered 1950 Cadillac Debutante, sing along with Dinah Shore while you "See the U.S.A. in Your Chevrolet," or shake your head in wonder at the fur bikini-clad model atop a Soviet-built Lada. From turn-of-the-century goddesses and 1950s sex symbols to the sleek sophistication of today's highly trained product specialists, Sirens of Chrome will take visitors back in time and drive them forward combining the fashion, models and automobiles in this unique display.

The community is invited to attend the grand opening of this exhibit this Saturday, July 23. This event is free for Gearhead Museum Members and included with admission for nonmembers. For more information the public can call (916) 442-6802 or visit www.CalAutoMuseum.org.

The California Automobile Museum is located at 2200 Front Street, Sacramento, CA 95818. The public can contact the museum by telephone is 916-442-6802 or visit the website at www.calautomuseum.org. The museum is open 7 days a week from 10am-6pm and on third Thursdays of every month until 9pm.

Americana/ Bluegrass Band, Dehlia Low, Plays the Sutter Creek Theatre on Sat, July 30th with Rita Hosking & Cousin Jack

Dehlia Low Releases a New Album on Rebel Records August 2nd
Posted: 7/13/2011

Asheville, NC -- Newly signed to Rebel Records, Dehlia Low echoes the sounds of early country with a strong bluegrass flavor, crafting a fresh originality that feels like home in this new album produced by the Infamous Stringdusters’ Travis Book.

Dehlia Low pushes bluegrass music squarely into the emerging Americana genre, combining their gripping, rustic-flavored vocal style with extraordinary instrumental prowess in original songs that feel at once both old and new. The band’s Rebel debut Ravens & Crows is the eagerly-anticipated follow up to their acclaimed 2009 independent studio release, Tellico. Produced by Travis Book of Grammy-nominated and IBMA Emerging Artist winners The Infamous Stringdusters, Ravens & Crows will help firmly establish Dehlia Low as one of the most compelling and distinctive young groups on the acoustic music scene today. With their tasteful, sometimes moody blending of different styles, the group has created a unique sound that already seems fully mature and established.

Dehlia Low formed in late 2007 as part of Asheville, North Carolina’s roots music renaissance. Singers Anya Hinkle (from Blacksburg, VA on fiddle) and Stacy Claude (from Atlanta, GA on guitar) pulled together a group of talented pickers from the region: Aaron Ballance on Dobro (Winston-Salem, NC), Bryan Clendenin on mandolin (Hurricane, WV) and Greg Stiglets on bass (Jackson, MS). The group’s sound is focused on original music rooted in bluegrass but with a distinctive country/folk feel true to their southern Appalachian roots.

By early 2008, just a half year after playing their first show at Asheville’s Grey Eagle, the band’s first, self-titled EP was on radio waves across the US. Its astonishing reception on Western North Carolina’s WNCW as #16 of its best new releases of 2008 gave Dehlia Low an unexpectedly rapid regional notoriety. The group increased their touring radius and repertoire, resulting in their first proper studio release Tellico in 2009 and an exciting national tour in support of the album. That year, Dehlia Low recorded a video-taped set for PBS affiliates syndicating the “Jammin’ at Hippie Jack’s” series, performed at Rhythm and Roots (Bristol, TN), Pickathon (Portland, OR) and the Durango (CO) Meltdown in addition to extensive regional touring.

In 2010, Dehlia Low expanded its audience by leaps and bounds after well-received sets at several of the most prominent music festivals in the country, including MerleFest and the Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival. Their MerleFest set was released by FestivalLink.net, and cuts from that same performance were selected for a Bluegrass Trust Fund compilation CD alongside the likes of the Krueger Brothers and Steve Martin with the Steep Canyon Rangers. The group recorded a number of other shows at some of the best venues in the Southeast such as the Grey Eagle, the Down Home and the Mockingbird; tracks from these gigs were included on their November 2010 release Live, capturing the magical intensity of a live Dehlia Low show.

"The heartfelt mountain sounds of this new band recall the Carter Family and the Stanley Brothers." ~ Diane Amov, Bluegrass Spotlight on MerleFest

"One of those kinds of bands that I just really fall in love with" ~ Iaan Hughes, No Depression

About Rita Hosking and Cousin Jack:

Kitchen tables, loggers, trailers, springs, loss, miners, culture clash, hope, forest fires— Rita Hosking's show is about all that and more, and always fierce and lovely. Her delivery is, to put it simply, intense. "From the first time I heard Rita sing, her voice gripped me and did not let go," (Joe Craven.) Her voice, called a "soulful howl from the mountains" is calling attention among country-folk fans everywhere. "This California girl comes by her mountain-music sensibility with true authenticity, with original songs deeply rooted in her family's frontier experience," (FestivalPreview.com.) Rita’s record was selected “Best Country Album” in the 2010 Independent Music Awards, 3rd Coast Music Magazine of Austin, Texas called her “Female Artist of the Year” for 2009, she was a finalist in the 2009 Telluride Troubador Contest, and the winner of the 2008 Dave Carter Memorial Songwriting Contest at the Sisters Folk Fest in Oregon. “The songs of Rita Hosking are as fragile as a newborn baby and as defiant as a West Virginia coal miner,” (Fiddlefreak Folk Review.) “Florence and the Baroque” on view November 5, 2011 through February 12, 2012
Posted: 7/6/2011

Sacramento, Calif. - The Crocker Art Museum will welcome two distinguished lecturers in conjunction with the exhibition “Florence and the Baroque: Paintings from the Haukohl Family Collection,” an exhibition of paintings and sculptures from the largest privately-held collection of the period in the United States. Scholars Anthony Colantuono, associate professor of art history at the University of Maryland, and William U. Eiland, director of the Georgia Museum of Art, will give visitors an opportunity to further explore key themes illustrated in the exhibition.

Colantuono will inaugurate the exhibition with a public lecture on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m. A specialist in Italian Baroque painting, Colantuono will discuss the artistic and cultural context in Florence that led to the creation of the paintings of the Dandini family, Francesco Furini, Felice Ficherelli, and additional artists in the exhibition.

Professor Colantuono is the author of many studies of Baroque and Renaissance painting in Italy, including the books “Guido Reni's Abduction of Helen: The Politics and Rhetoric of Painting in Seventeenth-century Europe” and “Titian, Colonna and the Renaissance Science of Procreation: Equicola's Seasons of Desire.” He is also a recipient of the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome, a fellowship at I Tatti, the Harvard University Center for Renaissance Studies, and research grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Eiland will present a lecture on the imagery of Saint Sebastian and its cultural meanings for LGBTQ viewers on Thursday, Jan. 26, at 6 p.m. His lecture will focus on two paintings in the exhibition, differing images of Saint Sebastian by Felice Ficherelli and Onorio Marinari, before moving to the wider cultural links between the saint and the LGBTQ audience. The recipient of the James Short Award from the Southeastern Museums Conference and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Georgia Association of Museums and Galleries, Eiland is a trustee of the International Council of Museums and has held various posts with the American Association of Museums and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Eiland lecture is being supported by Sir Mark Fehrs Haukohl under whose auspices the exhibition has been generously lent to The Crocker Art Museum. Sir Mark added, “It is our goal to address the topic of diversity via the Haukohl family’s philanthropy. We are delighted to support LGBTQ issues as interpreted in Baroque Italy and brought forward to today.” Sir Mark is a co-founder of the Medici Archive Project, which is a charitable foundation in Florence, Italy cataloging and researching over 300 years of original documents surrounding the Medici family in Europe. He is also President of The Vero Group of Houston, Texas.

“I AM YOUR CHIEF” A PAINTING DEPICTING THE MODOC WAR

A collaboration by Artists Patricia Mills and de Portola – Book signing by Cheewa James, author of MODOC: The Tribe That Wouldn’t Die
Posted: 6/28/2011

Fair Oaks, CA: The northern California 1873 Modoc War – the most expensive Indian battle ever waged – pitted 55 Modoc warriors against more than 1,000 U.S. soldiers by the end of the six month war. This is a story all Sacramento area residents should familiarize themselves with as the Modoc War battlefields are a scant half day’s drive from Sacramento – permanently preserved in the Lava Beds National Monument, Calif. It is in this area that the Modoc’s massive natural lava fortress, known as Captain Jack’s Stronghold, once rang with the shouts of Indians and soldiers… and the screams of the Modoc women and children who were in the stronghold with the men. It is a recounting of the anguish and heartbreak experienced by soldiers, Modocs and nearby settlers.

Building on this energy, Mills and de Portola’s work captures the spirituality and passion of the Modoc War through color and form. Meeting as graduate students at Calif. State University, Sacramento some years ago, these two knew someday they would have to create a painting together. That day has come. Mills says, “I was so moved by what I knew of the tragedy of this war, my heart cried out to turn to my paint and pallet.” Artist de Portola is from the area of the Modoc War battlefields and has had an affinity and passion for the people that live there. His passion for this history is transported to this painting. Artists Patricia Mills and de Portola depict these powerful scenes from the Modoc battlefields.

Cheewa James, author of MODOC: The Tribe That Wouldn’t Die, will be in attendance for a book signing from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. James is a descendant of one of the Modoc warriors. Her book is a richly documented, non-fiction narrative with high-energy, fictionalized inserts.

The gallery opening and unveiling of the painting is July 9, 2011 from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at Art Gallery Tupos, 10120 Fair Oaks Blvd., Ste. A&B, Fair Oaks, CA 95628 in the Old Fair Oaks Village.

"Peter Pan" Opens at Davis Musical Theatre Company

Posted: 6/2/2011

Equally entertaining for adults and children, the legendary show has Pan flying over the DMTC audience.

Davis, CA The high-flying musical fantasy, Peter Pan, swoops into delight children of all ages when the musical lands at Davis Musical Theatre Company stage, June 17 -July 10, 2011.

Directed by Steve Isaacson, choreography by Cyndi Mitterholzer and musical direction by Kay Hight, Peter Pan tells the familiar story of the boy who won't grow up. Finding a like-minded young girl named Wendy and her brothers, Pan takes them via flight to Neverland. But the island is fraught with danger including a tentative truce with Indian chief, Tiger Lily and a dastardly Captain Hook. This musical work, includes the favorites - "Never Never Land," "I Won't Grow Up" and "I'm Flying." Peter Pan will delight the immortal child in all of us.

PAN'S LONG TRIP TO BROADWAY

Although the play was first produced in 1904, it began life with JM Barrie's short story, Peter Pan, Or The Boy Who Never Grew Up. Soon after Barrie adapted it for the stage. After a successful year long run in London, the show open in New York. In 1953, Peter Pan was animated by Walt Disney Studios after Walt acquired the rights to the JM Barrie character in 1935. It was originally supposed to be a follow-up to Bambi, but was placed on the back burner during WWII. By 1955, a musical version of the show was originally commissioned by the San Francisco Light Opera Company with a score by Mark (Moose) Charlap (music) and Carolyn Leigh (lyrics). When it was in danger of closing on the West Coast before its trip to Broadway, Jerome Robbins called in Jule Styne (music) and Betty Comden and Adolph Green (lyrics) as show doctors. The result is a combination of wonderful songs from each team that effectively tell the Barrie play. Charlap/Leigh contributions include "I've Gotta Crow", "I'm Flying" and "I Won't Grow Up"; Styne/Comden and Green's include "Never Never Land", "(Build a House for) Wendy", "Ugh-A-Wug" and "Oh, My Mysterious Lady". The Broadway version starred Mary Martin in a defining role as Peter Pan and Cyril Ritchard as Captain Hook. Both received Tony Awards. The musical has had two celebrated revivals with Sandy Duncan in the lead role and, again, in 1998, with Olympic gymnast Cathy Rigby.

How did the festival come about? Festival Founder and 15-year-old Granite Bay resident Austin Lee approached Tien Hsieh about doing a music festival. In 2009, Austin hosted Champagne Concerto, an event held in order to raise money for Del Oro Caregiver Resource Center, as well as honor Austin's piano instructor, Sylvia Hsieh. Through continuous encouragement and support from his piano teachers, Sylvia and Tien Hsieh, Austin was inspired to form the Classical Masters Music Festival.

Key influences involved in bringing the idea to fruition include Dr. Thelma Scott-Skillman, President of Folsom Lake College; Tien Hsieh, Artistic Director/Co-Founder of Classical Masters Music Festival; Austin Lee, Founder of Classical Masters Music Festival; and a team of supporters who believed in the importance and value of music.

All events will take place at Three Stages Performing Arts Center on the campus of Folsom Lake College (10 College Parkway in Folsom). For tickets, go to: www.threestages.net or call 916-608-6888. Sacramento Region - Conductor Donald Kendrick and the Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra royally capped their 15th concert season with a thrilling evening of Broadway love songs that enraptured a large audience on Saturday, April 30th at the Mondavi Center.

The engaging repertoire, spanning five decades of American Musical Theater’s most renowned collaborators such as Rodgers & Hammerstein, Rodgers & Hart, Jerome Kern and Cole Porter, brought smiles to the faces and instilled hope in the hearts of last Saturday’s concert goers.

The SCSO’s musical team included a “swinging” orchestra deftly conducted by Donald Kendrick, four amazing Broadway soloists and a very tight and well-prepared SCSO Chorus whose role, while somewhat minor throughout the evening, nonetheless added sparkle and great energy to the evening.

All four soloists turned out to be strong actors as well as highly talented Broadway singers who perfectly understood and delivered the music with panache, much to the delight of the audience, singing more than twenty selections from memory. Soprano Christi Amonson charmed the audience with her mischievous nature, her clear voice effortlessly reaching stratospheric high notes. Kristin Dauphinais’ commanding presence on stage and amazing range thrilled the audience throughout the evening. Local Tenor/Actor Tevye Ditter was entirely at home on stage throughout the evening and his natural tenor voice revealed a rich sound that belied his age and experience. Baritone Ian Greenlaw’s impeccable musicianship shone through at the performance. His commanding baritone voice filled the Mondavi hall with ease and grace.

Conductor Donald Kendrick was the driving force that kept the entire evening humming along smoothly, causing toes to tap and faces to smile. His precision with all of the musical forces reflected his natural and innate conducting abilities and desire to show both performers and concert attendees a memorable evening.

The SCSO will celebrate this season’s hard work at its upcoming Raising a Voice for the Arts party/fundraiser on Saturday, June 4th at Sacramento’s own Temporary Contemporary Gallery at 1616 Del Paso Blvd. For information and tickets, visit sacramentochoral.com or call (916) 536-9065. RICKIE LEE JONES TO PERFORM HER TWO FIRST ALBUMS AT THREE STAGES

Grammy Award-winning chanteuse comes to Folsom
Posted: 4/28/2011

Folsom, CA. Her songs are familiar to anyone who had the radio on in the 1980’s: “Chuck E’s In Love,” “We Belong Together,” “A Lucky Guy,” “Young Blood.” All conjure up “The Duchess of Coolsville” (Time), Grammy-Award winning singer-songwriter Rickie Lee Jones who will perform her first two (and arguably most successful) albums— her self-titled debut and Pirates—in their entirety at Three Stages on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 7:30 pm.

“Rickie Lee Jones is an iconic figure in pop music,” notes Dave Pier, Executive Director of Three Stages, “and to have her and her seven-piece band perform some of her best-received material in its entirety will be a real treat for her fans.”

Tickets are $25-35, with Premium tickets available for $45; they are available online at www.threestages.net or from Three Stages Ticket Office at 916-608-6888 from 10 am to 6 pm, Monday through Saturday, and two hours before show time. Three Stages is located on the west side of Folsom Lake College campus in Folsom, CA, facing East Bidwell Street.

Rickie Lee Jones was born in Chicago Illinois in November of 1954. Her family moved to Phoenix in 1960 where she lived until the age of 14. In the spring of 1969, Rickie Lee ran away to California, hitch hiking up and down highway one. She ended up in juvenile detention in Detroit, and was returned to her father in Kansas City, who then took her back to her mother's in Olympia, Washington, where the family resided until she moved to Venice, California, in 1973.

By 1977 Rickie Lee was performing in clubs as a solo act, with the occasional band gig in Hollywood. It was on Venice Boardwalk that she met her songwriting partner Alfred Johnson. They worked Thursdays in September at the Ala Carte, performing their own songs including Company, Youngblood, Weasel and the White Boys, Easy Money and The Moon is Made of Gold, a song written by Rickie Lee’s father Richard Jones, the son of Vaudevillian Peg Leg Jones.

Rickie Lee was 'discovered' by Warner Brothers A&R producer Lenny Waronker (Randy Newman, James Taylor) who produced her first two and most successful records with his partner Russ Titleman (Eric Clapton). Rickie's self-titled debut, as well as her follow up "Pirates" remain to this day, two of the most influential recordings in the 'singer-songwriter ' genre.

With her trend-setting debut, and performances punctuated by the infamous red beret, fishnet gloves and bold sexual persona, the fashion of Rickie Lee Jones became a mainstay of the 80's to be followed and reinterpreted by other 80's icons. Jones' unmistakable clear alto tone, vibrato-less, half spoken voice became a benchmark of pop singing today. Her choices, too, impacted the way that pop music would be perceived.

While other singer-songwriters simply did not record other people's songs, Jones defied these confines and recorded jazz ballads on her LPs (Girl at her Volcano). Her refusal to be fitted into a genre made her own career a difficult one to promote, but opened the door for many who came after her.

She has recorded thirteen full-length studio albums since her debut in 1979, and remains one of the most potent singers performing today. While she has influenced many aspects of popular culture, from restaurant chains to fashion icons, Rickie Lee is still regarded as something of a cult figure. While her image graced the cover of Rolling Stone magazine twice in two years between 1979 and 1981, surprisingly few have heard the range of her work.

Rickie Lee Jones, incorporating her own take on fashion and sexuality, merged ideas that simply had not yet been merged: Sex and song writing. The enigmatic Miss Jones continues to shape her own genre. Intuition and emotion are the raw stuff of her performances; her tools are jazz and pop, but her genius is her own emotional landscape and her ability to convey it for others to experience.

The California Automobile Museum presents The Politician and the Pop Princess exhibit. The powder blue 1974 Plymouth Satellite used by California Governor Edmund G. "Jerry" Brown during his first two terms in office (1975-1983), has long been a star attraction at the Museum and now has been joined by a long-lost flame!

These vehicles, and additional artifacts, pay affectionate tribute to Governor Brown and Ms. Ronstadt and will take Museum visitors back to the 1970s. The cars and artifacts tell a uniquely "California" story of romance, the media, and the intersection of politics and fame.
